My Herd's all come from Easthaven near Carnoustie, Angus. Although the name is pronounced Hird by the locals it is always spelled Herd in OPR's and census'.
John Herd appears to have been from without the area as there are no mention of Herd's in the parish of Panbride before that time.
James Herd (1796) lost his first wife (Betsy Gellie) to cholera and married a younger women. He had six children to each wife and fathered his last child when aged 67.
James Herd junior also had a large family (including my great-grandmother and the 3 men standing in the photograph) and lived at Easthaven for his whole life. My great x2 uncles who feature in the photograph rescued people from the sea in a terrible storm even though they were all getting up in years. There heroism was the reason for the photograph and a poem was also written for them.
