My grandfather although born in Carnoustie was mostly brought up at Easthaven (shown in picture) after the family moved there when he was a small child. However, his father also John Duncan was born in Johnshaven, Kincardine. Two more generations had also hailed from Johnshaven, Edwin Duncan (also pictured) who ended up being the Salmon Fishing Manager for all of the salmon operations in Carnoustie and his father the mysterious James Duncan.
James Duncan who appeared in census' in 1841 and 1851 in Johnshaven and was supposedly born in Johnshaven has proven impossible to track after 1851. There is no birth record in the IGI for him, he never appeared to marry and there is no record of a death for him. Of course Duncan is a common surname and James a common first name which further clouds matters.
A while back I created some morphs of my ancestors with a software package called Morpheus, here is one. | See the animation at the left as Edwin Duncan's face turns into his eldest son John's. |

Both photos of Edwin Duncan were provided by Douglas and Joann Beattie. The photo of John Duncan (1862-1956) was supplied by John G Duncan. The photo of Easthaven was taken by the author.
