What details I have for my furthest back Bruce is from George Bruce and Catharine Cadenhead's gravestone in the graveyard on Rossie Island near Montrose. The stone was erected by their daughter May. George died in 1846 and thus nine years before deaths had to be registered.

Alexander Bruce married Mary Gordon on the 22nd of May 1824 in the Parish of Dun, Angus. Both Alexander and Mary lived to old age and died in Forfar while living with their daughter. Alexander was born in Bonnytown in the parish of Maryton (parish church pictured above).

David Bruce was the 7th of 10 children of Alexander and Mary. David in his early days followed in the footsteps of his forefathers and was an agricultural labourer. But at some point he and his wife Margaret Beattie moved to Arbroath and he worked in a factory.

David Alexander Bruce (pictured) was the second of six children. He rose to become manager of the bleachfield at Elliot. David married Isabella Kerr and they had six children including my grandmother Maggie.
